Federal D.R.E.A.M. Act

The Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act is a piece of legislation that would provide a pathway to citizenship for undocumented youth who:

  • Arrived before the age of 16 and is no older than 35.
  • Have lived in the U.S. for more than 5 years.
  • Graduated from high school or obtained the equivalent.
If criteria is met, the person gets 6-year conditional permanent resident status where she/ he has to:

  • Go to college or enlist in the armed forces for at least two years.
  • Maintain good moral character.
  • Also, it would eliminate federal provision in IIRIRA of 1996 (10-year provision).
In December of 2010, the DREAM Act FAILED to pass in the U.S. Senate by four votes.

Advocates continue committed to fight for the DREAM Act and other pro-immigrant bills.
